TikTok “Leigha Martin” @leigha.kate, an American living in Singapore, posted her favourite social norm in Singapore – where they collective order and take care of each other’s drinks during lunch. She gushes about how this is a “subtle way of looking after the people you’re eating lunch with”, and how “cute” this is. She raves about this “small act of kindness”, which is “done consistently without fail”.

In the comment section, Singaporeans collectively share their experiences of this social norm during lunch time, with some stating that this was so ingrained in the Singaporean culture that this was not obvious to them. Others were heartened that she has such wholesome work colleagues to work with as well, or quipped that the Asian culture is to take care of each other. Furthermore, it was revealed that it is rude to order and drink on your own when you are in a group setting.

It is always heartening to hear praise about Singaporeans from foreigners who reside here. Despite Singaporeans’ usual nonchalant demeanor, this social norm of getting lunchtime drinks together seems to be common in many people’s experiences. Although it initially came as a surprise when Singapore was listed as the Asia’s 2nd friendliest city in 2024, such common shared experiences amongst Singaporeans proved that we are a friendly city after all.
